What I like is
the pyrotechnics always just past
the paper horizon,
waiting to burst from underneath.

Ars Poetica Designs is a multimedia collection of visual and literary arts encompassing fine art, graphic design, video, and nonfiction creative writing. The bedrock of its assemblage is fine art photography, which
highlights the work of Lisa Careau as well as guest photos, including that of her husband, Mark Jordan (and occasionally other contributors' work).
A New England theme is woven among the site's offerings, providing the backdrop for many of the images, both captured and conjured. Mounted photographs from our portfolios can be purchased from the gallery displayed here, as well as APD all-occasion cards located here and here.
Our brand name is taken from the poem Ars Poetica, by Archibald MacLeish, who derived his verse from the eponymous prose poem by Roman lyric poet, Horace. Both poems feature maxims on the art of writing poetry--the former is highly nuanced, while the latter epistolary in nature. MacLeish's poem is a metaphysical meditation that blurs the lines between poetry and art, evoking thoughts and images that merge into a new creation. These relational universals that exist between the arts has always been of keen interest to Lisa, who has found pairing visual art and literature (and/or music) in her work to be instinctive and an effectual synthesis.
About the artist:
A lifelong New Englander, Lisa holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Clark University, where she specialized in sculpture and still life painting. For several years she was the director of a small public library in central Massachusetts. There she established, among many other cultural opportunities for the public, an exhibit gallery to facilitate patron enrichment, and provide professional exposure for fine artists. She retired in 2011, and currently resides with her husband in Northampton, MA. After a very long hiatus (owing to the demands of child rearing and career) she has resumed her creative pursuits, exhibiting at local galleries , participating in photo contests, as well as writing. Her article "A Valentine Tale" was published in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. In the fall of 2019 Lisa released two still life photo cookbooks: "Hanging the Moon", and "Confections of a Sweet Tooth".
